We’re amused (and bemused) every January 1st as everyone around us makes resolutions and lays plans for the year ahead. Of course, we get it: the new year is a beginning, and beginnings are profound and wonderful things. Beginnings carry hope and potential, speaking of what could be. “In the Beginning”, as the famous opening phrase goes, hints at the story that will be written, and the triumphs and tragedies to come.

But here’s the real source of our amusement (and bemusement): why January 1st? Why not October 14th? Or August 3rd? Or today? Isn’t it a bit odd that people wait until January 1st to move from inaction to action and begin their story? It’s trite yet true that every day – every instant – is a beginning (our lives are nothing but beginnings!), the start of our own story to come.
